Governors to Mbadi: Release funds in 14 Days or We Shut Down Counties!

The Council of Governors today issued a 14-day ultimatum to Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, threatening to shut down county operations

Kenyan governors have given the national government 14 days to release money owed to counties. If the money is not released, they say they will shut down county operations. This means hospitals, roads, water services, and county staff salaries could be affected.

“We, as governors, issue a 14 day ultimatum to the government, failure to which county governments will shut down,” ," Governor Anne Waiguru stated.

The governors argue that these delays have severely hampered service delivery, affecting critical sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, and employee salaries. They emphasize that without the immediate release of the owed funds, counties will be unable to sustain operations, thereby compromising service delivery to millions of Kenyans.

"Counties are struggling. We cannot pay salaries, maintain hospitals, or finish development projects. If the funds are not released, we have no choice but to shut down," CoG chair Ahmed Abdullahi stated.

With only 14 days left, Kenyans are waiting to see if the government will act or if counties will close.
