Kenya’s Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, Prof. Bitange Ndemo, has turned down his appointment as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, citing procedural irregularities.
On May 8, 2025, the University Council announced that Prof. Ndemo would assume the VC role after completing his diplomatic mission. In the meantime, Prof. Francis Jackim Mulaa was appointed Acting Vice Chancellor for six months to facilitate the leadership transition.
However, Prof. Ndemo released a statement distancing himself from the decision, calling the process “unprocedural” and confirming his withdrawal.
“I wish to make it clear that I dissociate myself from this unprocedural process. I have formally withdrawn my candidacy,” he said.
According to Prof. Ndemo, after receiving his appointment letter, he reached out to the Council Chair, Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, to confirm whether the appointment had been approved by the Cabinet Secretary for Education—as required by law. Though he was assured the necessary steps were taken, Ndemo remained unconvinced that proper procedure was followed.
His statement came despite a wave of public support and congratulatory messages following the Council’s announcement.
