Homa Bay Deputy Governor Survives Assassination Attempt, Raises Security Concerns
Homa Bay Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday night. After noticing suspicious activity outside his home, he took a different route, but attackers ambushed his decoy car, leading to a gunfire exchange before they fled.

Barely two days after the burial of Kasipul MP Charles Were, Homa Bay County has been rocked by another disturbing incident involving the region’s political leadership. On Sunday night, Deputy Governor Joseph Oyugi Magwanga survived what is believed to be an assassination attempt at his home in Kabuor village.

The incident occurred at around 9 PM. According to a member of the Deputy Governor’s security team—who requested anonymity—the DG was away when his family noticed suspicious movement around the compound by unknown individuals. Alarmed, the family quickly alerted him. In response, he changed his travel plans, using a different vehicle and route to return home.

As the decoy car approached the compound, the attackers launched an ambush. However, the Deputy Governor’s security team was prepared. A gunfire exchange ensued, eventually forcing the assailants to retreat. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but the attack has left many shaken.

Speaking to the press from his home, Deputy Governor Magwanga confirmed that he had previously received threats to his life, though he had not anticipated such a swift and direct attempt. He appealed to security agencies to act urgently, investigate the matter thoroughly, and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

This incident marks the third attack on a political figure in Homa Bay County within a span of two months. Earlier, MCA Vickins Bondo survived an attack in Nairobi. The frequency of these incidents has raised serious concerns over the safety of leaders in the region and the general state of security.
