Shollei Criticizes Maraga Over Role in Protests
Gladys Shollei Slams Former CJ David Maraga for Participating in June 25 Anniversary Protests

Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Gladys Shollei, has strongly criticized former Chief Justice David Maraga for joining the June 25 protests. Speaking in Parliament, Shollei accused Maraga of taking part in demonstrations that she claimed were not peaceful but violent and destructive.

She pointed out that Maraga, despite being retired and receiving government-paid benefits such as cars, a cook, and a gardener, had no business being in the streets protesting.

Shame on you, Chief Justice Maraga,” she said. “You are misleading our children and destroying people’s property.”

Shollei praised the police for their response to the chaos and called for quick arrests of individuals seen on CCTV damaging public buildings. She also noted the suffering of families who lost property and income due to the unrest, saying some may now struggle to feed their children or pay school fees.

On the other hand, Maraga maintained that the protests were peaceful. He was teargassed during the protest and later wrote on X, “We strongly condemn the use of state violence against grieving families and peaceful protesters. The violation of the Constitution and human rights must stop.”

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen reported that 10 people died, over 400 were injured, including 300 police officers and nine police stations were attacked. A total of 28 government vehicles, 88 police cars, and 65 private vehicles were destroyed during the protests.

The exchange highlights the growing tension between government officials and protest leaders over the right to demonstrate versus maintaining public order.
