Police officer who shot Boniface Kariuki pleads not guilty to murder charges
Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa, the police officer accused of shooting mask vendor Boniface Kariuki, has pleaded not guilty to the murder charges at the Milimani Law Courts.

Police Constable Klinzy Masinde Barasa has pleaded not guilty to the murder of 22-year-old Boniface Kariuki Mwangi, who was fatally shot during anti-government protests in Nairobi on June 17, 2025. Masinde appeared before High Court Judge Kimondo Kanyi on Monday, July 28, 2025, where the charge was formally read to him. Dressed in a white jumper and blue face mask, Masinde stood silently as the court recorded his plea.

Plea of not guilty is accordingly entered,” said Justice Kanyi after Masinde responded to the charge. State Prosecutor Vincent Monda confirmed that a mental assessment report filed by government psychiatrist Dr. Priscilla Makau on July 21, 2025, found Masinde fit to stand trial. “We are ready to take a plea,” Monda told the court.

Masinde’s lawyer, Abdrazak Mohamed, requested 14 days to prepare and file a formal bond application. “We intend to pursue his release on bail pending trial,” he submitted. However, the prosecution objected, citing concerns over witness interference and security risks. “We have filed an affidavit opposing bail, sworn by investigating officer Sarah Mwea,” Monda said.

The prosecution argued that some witnesses are Masinde’s colleagues and that his release could compromise the investigation. “The officer’s release could interfere with key witnesses and pose a risk to their safety,” Monda added.

Justice Kanyi ordered that Masinde be remanded at Industrial Area Prison Remand until his bail application is heard on August 19, 2025. The murder charge remains under active prosecution as the court prepares for the next stage in the proceedings.
