Comedian Zakaria Kariuki alias KK Mwenyewe, famous for imitating Rigathi, dies while undergoing treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital

Kenya has lost one of its most beloved comedic voices. Zakaria Kariuki, known to millions as KK Mwenyewe, passed away on Monday night at the Kiambu Level Five Hospital after a short illness. His sudden death has left a deep void in the hearts of fans, fellow creatives, and leaders alike.

KK Mwenyewe was more than just a comedian. He was a storyteller with a sharp eye for the nuances of Kenyan life. His humour was not loud or aggressive. It was quiet, steady, and deeply impactful. Delivered through deadpan expressions and clever sketches, his content captured everyday frustrations and joys in a way that few others could. He had an uncanny ability to turn ordinary moments into unforgettable performances.

His breakthrough came in 2022 after posting a skit where he hilariously mimicked former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s reaction to winning the general elections. The skit was a hit. Dressed in an oversized suit with a carefully crafted potbelly, KK brought the character to life with such detail and flair that the country could not stop watching. What began as a single skit grew into a body of work that defined a generation of political satire in Kenya.

With time, his audience grew. By the time of his death, KK had amassed over one point one million followers on TikTok and more than four hundred thousand on Facebook. But he never limited himself to one style or subject. He imitated teachers, students, civil servants, and even struggling Kenyans trying to get by. In doing so, he created a relatable universe that reflected both the comedy and the struggle in everyday life.

His rise from a Kisii University student to a national sensation was nothing short of inspiring. Even during tough times, KK remained true to his art. When he was at risk of dropping out due to school fees, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja came forward and cleared his balance. It was a moment that reminded many of the impact of his work and the value of supporting local talent.

His final skit was posted on July Fourth. Since then, he had been battling illness, and images of him in the hospital circulated widely on social media. The cause of his death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

His fellow comedian Kafengo confirmed the sad news in an emotional statement, calling on Kenyans to remember KK for the laughter he brought and the truth he spoke through satire. "We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, also known as Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention at Kiambu Level Five Hospital," read the post.

While former Deputy President Gachagua has yet to comment, tributes have poured in from across the country. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah described KK as more than a comedian. In his words, "Kenya has lost not just a comedian, but a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot. He used satire to hold a mirror to society. Not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite."

In death as in life, KK Mwenyewe leaves behind a legacy of courage, creativity, and laughter. He showed that comedy can be more than jokes. It can be a force for reflection and change.May his soul rest in peace. And may his light continue to inspire. Fare thee well, Mr KK Mwenyewe.
