Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi Condemns Attack on MP Peter Salasya at Nyayo Stadium

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has strongly condemned the assault on Mumias East MP Peter Salasya, which took place on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi.

In a statement, Mudavadi termed the attack as disrespectful and unfortunate, calling for political tolerance and respect for differing opinions.

“What happened to Hon. Peter Salasya at Nyayo Stadium today is unfortunate. Political intolerance undermines the very foundation of our democracy, which relies on the ability to engage with differing views,”

He further emphasized the need for dialogue over division, warning that a divided nation cannot progress.

“We won’t always agree, and that’s okay. But respect, dialogue, and unity must remain non-negotiable. Respect must be given, but it must also be earned. Fellow Kenyans, no one else will build this nation for us. If we let division win, we risk tearing down everything we hope to build. A house divided cannot stand. Let’s choose reason over chaos, and maturity over noise. Kenya’s future depends on it.”

The chaos erupted during Harambee Stars' World Cup qualifier match against Gabon. Videos circulating on social media show MP Salasya being chased out of the stadium by an irate crowd, with some individuals attempting to grab him while a plastic container was thrown at him.

Eyewitnesses claim that the attack was triggered by the MP's alleged use of abusive language against President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga. The altercation continued into the parking zone, where some of his supporters urged him to leave the stadium

The incident has sparked national debate on political intolerance, with leaders and citizens expressing concerns over rising hostility in political spaces.

Mudavadi’s statement adds to growing pressure on authorities to investigate the matter and ensure such incidents do not recur. As the debate continues, Kenyans are left questioning the state of democracy and freedom of speech in the country.
