In a deeply troubling incident that happened on 21st March 2025 in Nyamira County, Kenya, a widow was subjected to violence during her husband's funeral after refusing to engage in a traditional burial rite. The incident, which has garnered significant media attention and public outrage, highlights the broader issues of cultural practices and women's rights within the Abagusii community.

According to reports, the assault took place in the Nyabisimba area, where the widow was physically attacked by individuals believed to be her in-laws. Nyamira South Police Commander Martin Wambugu confirmed that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and they are set to be presented to the victim for identification.

A video shared on social media showed the widow being whipped after she declined to throw soil onto her husband’s coffin, a customary act expected of widows in the Abagusii culture. This situation highlights the pressure many women face to follow these traditions, even in times of grief.

This incident brings attention to the struggles of widows in the region, especially regarding their rights to land and property. Although Kenyan laws affirm equal inheritance rights for women, many widows still face threats of being thrown out of their homes or disinherited by their in-laws. Some are even wrongly accused of witchcraft, leading to further violence against them.
