Court Extends Suspension of CA Ban on Live Protest Coverage
High Court extends orders barring Communication Authority of Kenya from blocking media houses from broadcasting protests live

The High Court has extended orders that stop the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) from banning live coverage of anti-government protests.

On Wednesday, Justice Chacha Mwita said that several applications challenging the CA directive raised the same issues. He directed that the cases be combined into one. This comes after it was revealed that the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) had filed two different cases on the same matter.

The court has now set October 27 as the next date to give further directions.

Last week, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) went to court and got conservatory orders that suspended the CA’s directive. The CA had ordered all TV and radio stations to stop airing live coverage of the June 25, 2025 protests. LSK argued that the directive was against the Constitution.

This ruling is a crucial step in defending press freedom and the public’s right to know. As the matter returns to court in October, all eyes will be on the outcome and what it means for media independence and democratic expression in Kenya.
