A Kenyan police officer deployed under the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti has been reported missing following an ambush.

The National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the officer went missing on Tuesday, March 25, while on duty along the Carrefour Paye-Savien main supply route in the Pont-Sonde area, Artibonite Department.

A coordinated search and rescue operation, involving the MSS and the Haitian National Police (HNP), is ongoing to locate the missing officer

"Efforts are underway to establish the officer’s whereabouts, with teams actively engaged in search and rescue operations,"
- the NPS stated.

Despite the challenges, NPS praised the commitment of the over 600 Kenyan officers serving in Haiti, emphasizing their dedication to restoring peace and stability.

The incident follows the recent death of Constable Samuel Tompoi, who succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained in an attack on February 23. He was laid to rest on March 19.

The rising insecurity in Haiti has sparked growing concerns about the safety of Kenyan officers deployed under the UN-backed mission to help restore order in the country.
