Kenyan football is in turmoil after a video allegedly linking former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi to match-fixing surfaced online. The video, which has been widely shared, shows Matasi seated in the back seat of a stationary vehicle, appearing to listen as an unidentified individual speaks to him.

Matasi, who previously played for clubs like Tusker FC, AFC Leopards, Posta Rangers, and Ethiopia’s Saint George FC, was recently released by Kenya Police FC under unclear circumstances. He now plays for Kakamega Homeboyz FC.

His last appearance for Harambee Stars was in a 4-1 loss to Cameroon, a match in which he conceded four goals. One of the goals, considered soft by some fans, raised suspicions. Shortly after, head coach Engin Firat resigned.

Following the leaked video, many fans and football stakeholders have shared their concerns. Blogger Cyprian Nyakundi suggested that some of Matasi’s past performances should be scrutinized, pointing out that he had conceded goals that seemed avoidable. Coach Frank Ouna also weighed in, recalling past matches where he witnessed goals being conceded under unusual circumstances.

One such match was a friendly between Kenya and Uganda, which ended in a 1-1 draw. In that game, Matasi was in goal when Uganda equalized in the final minutes.

Despite the outrage, key details remain unclear, including when the video was recorded and the identity of the other person in the car. Efforts to reach Matasi for comment have so far been unsuccessful.

With these allegations now in the public domain, questions remain about whether further investigations will be carried out and what this could mean for Matasi’s career.
