PS Muriuki Affirms Free Services at Level 2 and 3 Hospitals to Boost Universal Healthcare

Principal Secretary Muriuki has reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Level 2 and Level 3 hospitals, describing them as the backbone of Kenya’s primary healthcare system.

Speaking during a tour of several facilities, PS Muriuki praised health workers for their dedication but acknowledged the challenges they face, from limited resources to growing patient numbers. He noted that Level 2 hospitals — typically dispensaries and health centres — serve as the first point of contact for patients, offering preventive care, maternal services, and treatment for common illnesses.

Level 3 hospitals, he explained, are crucial referral points for more complex cases, equipped with laboratories, maternity wards, and expanded outpatient services.

“Our goal is to ensure these facilities are well-staffed, fully equipped, and accessible to all Kenyans, especially in rural and underserved areas,” Muriuki said. He added that the Ministry of Health is rolling out a program to modernize equipment, improve drug supply chains, and invest in continuous training for medical staff.

He urged communities to make use of the hospitals, stressing that early diagnosis and treatment at Level 2 and 3 facilities can prevent the need for expensive care at higher-level hospitals.

“We are building a system where quality care is available close to home, and no Kenyan is left behind,” he concluded.
